Friendship Developmental Services first opened it's door in 1945. San Diego was a very different place in those days when James and Mattie Cheneweth, under the corporate name Valley View Sanitarium and Rest Home, began providing nursing services. For the next 30 years the company was very much a traditional nursing home.
In 1974, Friendship Developmental Services began to change it's mission. The opportunity arose for people with developmental disabilties to move out of state run hospitals and into the community. After 10 years of refining a quality program and philosophy for providing assistance to persons with developmental disabilties, Friendship built a new building dedicated to this purpose.

In 1993 we opened out first small home under the new ICF/DD-N licensing program. This allowed us to provided the needed medical assistance in a home-like setting. By 2007, Friendship will have 100 percent of it's residential services taking place within 6-bed ICF/DD-N homes. This will mean 18 homes through the south San Diego area.

It has been a priviledge to serve so many people over the years. We plan on being here another 60 years.
